Health Care and Educational Facilities

Coastal Risk Consulting, LLC (CRC) is uniquely qualified to assist local government and health care providers in preparing for the adverse public health impacts of flooding, storms, and sea level rise. Some academic institutions and government agencies are just beginning to analyze and prepare for the public health impacts of climate change after Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy; many have not yet begun this process and focus only on topic areas such as transportation, water supply and infrastructure, energy and public policy. CRC can help local governments, health care providers and academic institutions examine the public health aspects of impending sea level rise/storm surge and the benefits of its inclusion in coastal resilience, emergency preparedness and comprehensive planning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified 11 public health effects due to climate change in general with many of those listed (*) related specifically to sea level rise:

  • Asthma, Respiratory Allergies, and Airway Diseases*

  • Cancer

  • Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke*

  • Foodborne Diseases and Nutrition *

  • Heat-Related Morbidity and Mortality

  • Human Developmental Effects

  • Mental Health and Stress-Related Disorders*

  • Neurological Diseases and Disorders

  • Vector-borne and Zoonotic Diseases *

  • Waterborne Diseases *

  • Weather-Related Morbidity and Mortality*

  • Water quality changes, including salt water intrusion and increased urban runoff

  • Flooding events causing housing dislocation, health and food issues

  • Limited access to health care facilities

  • Behavioral health issues-stress related disorders, depression, post-traumatic syndrome

  • Injury-injury hazards in standing water create risk to property and person

  • Asthma, Respiratory Allergies, and Airway Diseases-growth of mold and fungus

  • Waterborne disease-Vibrio, Giardia

  •

  • Vector-borne and Zoonotic disease-Denge, West Nile, Lyme Disease

Preparation and outreach are imperative. CRC can provide targeted public health assessments that identify vulnerable populations and help communities develop adaptation and response strategies.
